I can't believe it's been 5 years since I started following Jesus! It was definitely the absolute best decision I have ever made. My testimony is a few entries back, if you'd like to read it. It's just a small part of everything God has done in my life, but it's an overview!
I love Jesus!
Unfortunately, the pain never did ease up yesterday. The pain medicine only lasted for a short while. I laid in bed all day (watching tv or on the computer.. not sleeping) and kept the heating pad on my back.
I had Bible study at 6. I wanted to skip because of the pain, but I had made plans to hang out with Annie afterwards and catch up, and that was very important to me. Since my TENS unit is in Madison, I used my moms (don't worry--we both got the same kind from the same physical therapist... so it's okay). I usually keep the number around 12. It was on 22 last night and I still wasn't getting relief. It was a rough day.
Annie and I went to Perkins and sat and talked. I ordered a $9 grilled chicken sandwich (well, it was a meal but I can't eat french fries) and ate 2 bites. Expensive 2 bites! :)
I came home and dinked around for a bit and then went to bed.
I woke up this morning with a nasty cold. Ugh!!! I have been sick more than not for over a month... so sick of it. I went back to sleep until about 9, but couldn't sleep any longer. I played some games on the computer and checked my e-mail until my mom came home at noon. She brought me some cold medicine. The only kind we had in the house was Tylenol. Because my pain medicine is Tylenol with codeine, I can no longer take Tylenol for a cold or headache or I could overdose. The medicine is already helping a bit, I think. Still not feeling great, but I hope it is better tomorrow.
The pain is still pretty bad today, but better. Thank God!
I had some lunch and read my book for a bit while my mom was home. When she left to go back to work, I came back to my room. I ended up making 5 cards today for people. :) I haven't felt up for it much lately because I haven't been feeling well. It was good to do something fun and relaxing.
I have an assignment that is due Friday that I should work on, but I am not feeling up for it. I will finish it tomorrow, I'm sure. It's already over half done.
I am hoping I am feeling much better tomorrow, because tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the women's retreat this weekend.
I can't believe that it is already Thanksgiving next weekend. I'm looking forward to spending time with the Lee's! :) I love holidays.
I am a bit chilly so I am going to turn up my space heater and put my slippers on. Then I'm going to go play a game for a bit until my mom gets home! Today has been such a lazy day, but I needed it! :)

Ouch =(
When I woke up this morning, my head hurt and I was having a lot of sinus problems. I wanted to just go back to bed, but I had to tutor. I got up and showered and got ready to go. My back was also hurting.
I got to campus to his dad's office, and his dad forgot it was Tuesday and didn't wake his son up to come. So I came back home. We may reschedule for tomorrow... depending on a few things.
I got home and I just want to scream and cry. I am in SO MUCH PAIN right now. My back is killing me today. I haven't felt this much pain in my back since last winter (winter is always worse because of the weather). I am having a hard time dealing with it...
Praying for either the pain to ease up... or strength to deal with the pain. I feel awful. =(
Pain, pain, go away... don't come back another day...

Lots of reading....
Well today was a pretty darn good day! For once I didn't really feel sick all day! I have a bit of a sore throat, but nothing major.
I tutored this morning. Ugh. Some days it's just frustrating, but I'm not going to go into that here.
While I was tutoring, I was reading a book (since I had nothing to do in between questions...). I finished the book This Side of Heaven by Karen Kingsbury. EXCELLENT book. Almost cried in the library! haha..
I got home and started reading The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers. I read about 50 pages and then had lunch. I read for awhile this afternoon, and am now on page 284 of 372. I will probably finish the book tomorrow! It's very good--I can't hardly put it down. I am going to need to get more books by these two authors... very very good books.
I also finished a final project for my health class, and am now done with 2 of my 4 classes!
I only have 9 things left on my to do list for the semester. I am hoping to get at least 4 of those 9 done before Friday!
I paid my cell phone bill today... that's about all I did all day!
It was a productive day, yet it was relaxing. I just laid on my bed this afternoon and read/did homework. Was very nice!
It's nice to do homework ahead of time--to almost be done, and not stress about deadlines. The soonest something is due is Friday, and I am almost done with that assignment.
I ate two real meals today, which was exciting. I haven't lost any weight in a few days--probably because I'm eating normally. I guess that's partially good (no more saltine cracker diet.. for now at least).. but I wish we had a treadmill so I could move a bit more.
It's too hard for me to walk outside with the cold. It was 21 degrees when I woke up this morning. Had to break out the winter coat.
Well I'm going to spend the rest of the night relaxing.. watching television or reading my book... I will work on more homework tomorrow :)

Testimony of change...
They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony… -Rev 12:11
I can hardly believe that it is already the middle of November. This whole semester has gone fast, yet slow at the same time. It’s been 3 months since surgery, and so much has changed. That’s what I want to write about—change. Not change since surgery, but just changes in my life.
When I was little, I rarely went to church. We went sometimes, but there were some issues that kept us from going each week. I remember just sitting and coloring or drawing during church anyway—I had no idea what the pastor was talking about.
I remember being asked a lot during middle school and high school if I wanted to go to youth group with some friends. Brianne and Summer asked me quite often. I started going to youth group at the Wesleyan church in Brookings, but was not going to church on Sundays. I loved youth group because it was fun. I loved the upbeat music and hanging out with friends. The messages were okay, but I didn’t understand a lot that was said. Christians tend to use words that people don’t know unless they grow up in the church, so I felt lost at times. Between two churches, I graduated high school being involved in a youth group.
Towards the end of high school, a lot of my friends changed. They were all church-going “Christians” (I don’t know their hearts, just know that they claimed to be Christians). As we got older, they became more interested in partying and drinking. Since I saw the effects of alcohol at a young age, I decided very young that I was never going to have one sip of alcohol. It was hard to see all of my friends drinking—I felt left out, yet didn’t want at all to be included in that activity.
I decided to start college at SDSU. I wanted to become involved with a Christian organization. Why? Because in my mind, real Christians were perfect. Funny, right? I thought that if I found a group of Christian friends, they wouldn’t ditch me for alcohol. While I was wrong (they are far from perfect), I have made some lifelong friends through it. I got involved with several organizations—InterVarsity, Navigators, CCF, Oasis, and Campus Crusade. I loved worshipping and fellowshipping with my friends!
InterVarsity was a bit different from the other organizations. Each seemed to have their own focus. Cru seemed to focus on fellowship and good times (the part I saw, anyway). Navigators focused on Bible studies and building your faith. InterVarsity focused a lot on sharing your faith with others. I heard once at InterVarsity that being a Christian was not just about believing in God. It was about having a personal relationship with Jesus. That always sounded so strange to me—the guy is dead! How can I have a relationship with him? I discovered, though, that they were right. It says in the Bible “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.” (James 2:19) Even demons believe that there is a God—and he is so powerful that they shudder when they hear his name. So believing in God is not the point—that won’t get a person to heaven.
I had talks with a few of my friends and let them know that I was interested in knowing more about this so-called “personal relationship”. They were happy to explain it to me and answer any of my questions.
So why am I writing this? What’s the point? Well, the point is this: I realized that I needed something more in my life. I needed something or someone to HOPE in. I needed a SAVIOR. And I found that in Jesus. It was almost 5 years ago—November 18, 2004—when I decided that I wanted to follow Jesus for the rest of my life. I wanted to be a Christian.
Let me tell you that it wasn’t a magic cure-all in my life. I grew up without a father figure in my life and was deeply wounded by that. I had a lot of hurt and anger and other issues to overcome. I dealt with depression and resorted to self-injury. I had low self-esteem and hated the person I was, inside and out. I struggled with chronic pain every day that made me wish my time on earth was coming to an end. I struggled a LOT in a lot of different ways. I spent a lot of my life unhappy, but hiding it. I didn’t want anyone to know—not even those that were closest to me.
Five years ago, I made the absolute best decision of my life. I decided that I wanted Jesus to come into my life and take control. I wanted him to heal my heart, my hurts… I wanted him to give me a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11) so I had something to live for. I wanted him to heal my pain so I could live a “normal” life (still waiting for that one…).
It’s been a crazy roller coaster since then. I have had struggles, trials, and pain. I’ve had many days when I’ve wanted to give up. I’ve slipped back into old patterns. I’ve had days when I wished I wasn’t alive. I had days I wished I was someone else. I’ve been from the highest point of a mountain to the very bottom of the valley. But the good far outweighs the bad, and Jesus has carried me through it all.
Hope has become my favorite word. I had a lot of dark times in my life between high school and the first few years of college. I would cry out in so much pain (physical and emotional pain) and ask “WHY ME?” I didn’t understand. Why didn’t I have a dad who cared enough to be around? Why did I have to deal with pain and struggle through school when people ruined their college careers by drinking every night? Why is it that I try so hard and fail when others get everything they want and more?
Don’t get me wrong—I have always had positive in my life as well. God has blessed me with some of the BEST friends over the years. I have always, at any given time, had at least a handful of close friends who have been there for me.
I’ve been blessed with a mother and brother who care greatly about me. My mom raised my brother and me alone—and has been there every single step of the way. Not only is she my mother, but she is truly my best friend (aside from Jesus!). My brother is a wonderful brother who loves me and cares, even when he doesn’t show it. I have other family who is a blessing as well.
My point is this: So much has changed in the last 5 years. I was struggling so much with feelings of depression and worthlessness. I found my worth in people, and if that one person (whoever it may be) didn’t love me, then I meant nothing and there was no point in even living. Now I’ve found Jesus. He has shown me that I am indeed worthy—I am a sinner and don’t deserve anything good in this life… but he gives me those things because he loves me and I am VALUABLE to him. That’s all that truly matters now. There is a God out there that created the world… who loves me so much that he sees every tear that falls from my eyes. He loves me enough to hold me through the bad times. He loves me enough to correct me when I am doing wrong. And most important, he loves me enough to send his son Jesus to die for me so I can spend eternity with him. It is there that I find my hope.
My life certainly isn’t perfect. I still deal with pain every day, and some days it is more than I feel I can handle. I have stress and struggles… but I know that I have hope because my best friend (Jesus) is there beside me through it all.
God has healed me in so many ways emotionally. He has taken away the hurts from me and given me joy. He has restored the relationship with my dad. He has made the relationship with my mom so strong that nothing can ever break it. He has taken away the depression (not that I don’t have bad days, but it’s very different). He’s made me see that I am important and precious in his sight. I have a reason to wake up each morning. I have a reason for living.
Kimberly always tells me that she feels that the reason I have dealt with some of the things I have is because I am going to help children someday going through the same things. I fully believe that. Now, looking into getting my masters degree in counseling, I am seeing more and more how all of my life has been a part of God’s plan.
The lowest times in my life have been for a reason—God is going to use every part of my life, good and bad, for his glory. And though I am the least deserving person in the world to be used for God’s glory, I am so thankful that God would choose to use me in such a big way.
I am thankful for my friends and family that have been there for me throughout all of this. I’ve had such a support system in both my high times and my low times. The most important thing is that my friends have pointed me back to Jesus each time.
I am SO grateful that God has placed each of my friends in my life. And I am so thankful that God knocked on my heart and called my name 5 years ago. My life certainly would not be this way without him. He has truly changed my life—and I will never forget!

I was going to write and then...
I was planning to write a big update on some things.. to post both here and on my CaringBridge website.
But then I got sidetracked. The good news is that I got sidetracked with two wonderful things.
1. Homework! I am working on homework that is not due until next Friday. I have 10 things left on my to-do list and then I am done for the whole semester! :)
2. Carla! My friend Carla (one of my absolute best friends) was texting me. We're making plans to hang out tomorrow... so I am currently talking to her through texts trying to figure out time and place. :)
I am excited to get out of town and just hang out tomorrow... I need it! :) We just decided that I will just sleep in til whenever and then head to Sioux Falls. That means that I could be there at 11... or 1... or 3... who knows! That works for me though. She wanted to do lunch, but I can't stand to be around food.. so it's probably best if I eat before I go. :)
I LOVE MY FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
One of my other best friends, Katie, is pregnant with her third child. I'm so excited!
My mom is still sick, and went back to the doctor today. Now she has bronchitis. Boo! Pray she gets better soon--and that I don't catch it! I don't need one more thing.. neither does she!
One more thing... when I was little my dad gave me a necklace... but the chain broke years ago. Today in the mail from him I got a new chain! I'm excited to have a full necklace again that I can wear. Thanks, dad!
Okay, back to the homework before I totally lose my motivation.

Memories of a Veteran
I was a boy from the country
I went to fight in the war
From Bootcamp to Burma
I fought my share and more
The Japanese were many
Hiding here and there
Behind the bushes and the trees
They were everywhere
At my feet my buddy fell
We were the best of friends
No matter how much time goes by
This nightmare never ends.
==================================
I wrote that poem when I was about 10 (in 4th grade). It was part of something we did for school. I remember going to my grandparents' house and looking through my grandpa's WWII things.. I wrote it in memory of my grandpa.
I miss you, grandpa... and love you! :)
Happy Veteran's Day to all the veterans out there--thank you for being a hero.

Final to do list
Still not feeling well today. I think my fever is down or gone (but not 100% sure), but my stomach is still upset and my head hurts a lot.
The good news is that I've lost 83 lbs to date... and I am 9 lbs away from a huge milestone... then obviously the next milestone is 100 lbs lost. So two milestones coming up, and I'm excited! :)
My EDFN class has always been week-to-week... no working ahead. Well, my teacher decided that this week is the last week of discussions (YAY!!!!!!!!!!) and after that we will have a written assignment each week. That means that I can work ahead (though, this class is tough and I probably won't work ahead too much because then I won't do it well). I have a list of everything I need to do for the class through the end of the semester.
Here's the exciting part--I only have 12 things on my to-do list (for all my classes combined) and then I am DONE! Hopefully I can finish early... that would be awesome. Here's my final to-do list:
HLTH
* Written assignment due 12/12
SPED 432
* Paper due 11/27
EDFN 460
* Read Freeman chapter 6
* Discussion for Unit 11 (due Thurs and Fri)
*
Unit 12 Reading: Freeman Chapter 7 and Crystal pg 88-93
*
Unit 12 Morphology Assignment 1 due 11/20
*
Unit 13 Reading: Freeman Chapter 8
*
Unit 13 Morphology Assignment 2 (Freeman pg 214-215 exercise 1 OR 2) due 11/15
*
Unit 14 Reading: Freeman Chapter 9 and Crystal pg 94-99
*
Unit 14 Syntax (Freeman pg 249-250 exercises 2, 3, and 6) due 12/4
*
Mini Paper 2 due 12/11
*
Exam 2 due 12/14
Exciting, right? I thrive on making to-do lists and then getting things done on them! I am so glad that this is my final one for the semester!
